Twisting and meandering through Combermere flows the mighty Madawaska River. The Madawaska is 230km long and originates from Source Lake in the highlands of nearby Algonquin Park. The river's name is derived from a band in the Algonquin First Nation's known as "Matouweskarini" or "people of the shallows". In the late 1800's the river was used to transport lumber from forested areas surrounding the river at Kamaniskeg Lake. Beginning in the 1940's the river was used to generate hydroelectric power at nearby Bark Lake where our sister resort, Sunny Hill Resort, is also located.
